Acyclovir (Zovirax)

Acyclovir (Zovirax) 5% ointmen or Penciclovir (Denavir) 1%
Acyclovir is indicated for the treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores)
Acyclovir reduces healing time and decrease pain related to herpes simplex virus.  It should not be used in the eyes or for the prevention of herpes simple viruses.

Active ingredient contains 50 mg of Acyclovir in a polyethylene glycol base.

Dispense: 30 grams tube, apply topically over lesions in sufficient quantity every 3 hours, 6 times per day for 7 days.  A rubber glove or finger cot should be used when applying acyclovir to prevent auto-inoculation to other body sites or transmission of infection to other persons.  Acyclovir should be stored in a dry place at temperature between 59° to 77°F.

Acyclovir side effects:
  1. Mild pain with transient burning and stinging, in rare situation itching, may be experienced
  2. Allergic reaction: hives, swelling, difficulty breathing
  3. Dry lips
  4. Dry skin 
AlternativeTreatment:

  • Take over-the-counter 1000-3000 mg of L-Lysine a day when have warning symptoms (itching, tingling, burning at the lips area) will promote healing and delay recurrences of cold sores.  If the lesion is present, apply Lysine Ointment for soothing and improve healing

  • Apply natural oils for cold sores at the lesion will accelerate the healing process
