Diflunisal (Dolobid)

Diflunisal (Dolobid) is a non-steroid, non-narcotic analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic drug (NSAIDS) for acute or long-term use in mild to moderate pain. Dolobid is completely absorbed within 2-3 hours following oral administration, and has long duration of action. A dosage prescribed depends on the severity of pain, patient's weight, age, and patient response.

NSAIDS risks:
  1. Cardiovascular risk.  NSAIDS may increase the events of myocardial infarction, stroke, which can be fatal.
  2. Gastrointestinal risk. NSAIDS mayincrease risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse reactions, e.g., bleeding, perforation of stomach or intestine, which can be fatal.

Active ingredient contains Diflunisol 250 and 500 mg in the tablet form
Inactive ingredients:Cellulose, Hydroxypropyl methycellulose, Hydroxypropyl cellulose, Magnesium stearate, Starch, Talc, Titanium oxide, Dye.

Dispense:
  • An initial dose of 1000 mg followed by 500 mg every 8-12 hours as needed for pain.
  • An initial dose of 500 mg followed by 250 mg every 8-12 hours 
Dolobid (Diflunisal) 500 mg is comparable in analgesic efficacy to Aspirin 650 mg or Acetaminophen 600 mg

Dolobid (Diflunisal) 1000 mg is comparable in analgesic efficacy to Acetaminophen 600 mg with Codeine 60 mg

Each Dolobid  is film-coated tablet supplied in 250 mg and 500 mg. Patient should take Dolobid as a whole tablet without crushing or chewing.  Maintenance doses should not exceed 1500 mg a day.  Death has been reported in overdose case.



Side effects of Dolobid are:
  1. Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, flatulence
  2. Insomnia
  3. Dizziness
  4. Tinnitus
  5. Rash
  6. Headache, fatigue, tiredness
  7. Dermatitis, urticaria, sweating
  8. Peptic ulcer, gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding and perforation
  9. Jaundice, fever, hepatitis
  10. Anemia
  11. Dysuria (pain during urination), renal failure
  12. Depression, nervousness, hallucinations, disorientation
  13. Vertigo, paresthesias
  14. Hypersensitivity reaction
  15. Dyspnea
  16. Heart palpitation
  17. Hearing loss
  18. chest pain
Contra-indications:  Do not prescribe Dolobid (Diflunisal) to
  • Patients who are allergic to aspirin or other NSAIDS
  • Patients who have per-existing asthma
  • Patients right before or after coronary artery bypass graft surgery
  • Patients who have cardiovascular symptoms
  • Patient with hypertension
